If you know East Harlem, you know Urban Garden Center! Owned and operated by the Gatanas family, the business traces its roots back three generations, to a flower shop run by Greek immigrants Demitrious and Calliope Gravanis. Passed down to daughter Aspasia and her husband Nick, and now to grandson Dimitri and his wife Sara, the store has updated its offerings over the years to include a wide range of everything you need to go green in the city. Urban Garden Center prides itself on environmental responsibility -- including recycling rainwater, accepting food scraps for compost, and raising a flock of chickens that always delight the kids -- and offers everything from simple seedlings to garden installation and design. Located underneath the Metro-North viaduct at 116th Street & Park Avenue, Urban Garden hosts a wide range of community events including regular pig roasts, a kids' club, and a farmers market.
