spot a yellow trashbag along the sidewalks? it means our clean team was there!

Uptown Grand Central traces its roots to street cleaning, as our first-ever initiative in 2013 was a volunteer East 125th Street clean-up led by area small business owners and residents.

In following years, we contracted with formerly homeless and addicted men through the Association for Community Employment (ACE) to provide street cleaning each weekday. Now, some seven years later, we have a deep understanding of the challenges along the East 125th Street corridor, and just how daunting a task it is to keep our street spick-and-span.

In Fall 2019, we began a new partnership to create a high-impact East 125th Street Clean Team that now sweeps the corridor seven days a week. Funded by our supporters listed below and powered by East Harlem job training organization Positive Workforce, the team is hard at work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and covers the following blocks: East 125th Street from Fifth to Second, and Park and Lexington avenues from 124th to 126th streets.

Check our homepage for the updated count of trashbags we collect in a week. Have an issue you want to report? Feel free to drop us a line at info@uptowngrandcentral.org.

More on Positive Workforce:

Positive Workforce is an East-Harlem based minority construction advocacy organization dedicated to obtaining gainful employment in the construction industry for minority building trade workers. Positive Workforce monitors many construction projects performed in New York City to ensure increased employment opportunities for minorities in proportion to the population percentages within the city and as defined by federal guidelines. The Clean Team is their first foray into the world of street cleaning, but as their headquarters is located on East 125th Street between Park & Lexington, they are well aware of the challenges and determined to make a difference right here at their own doorstep. They live up to their motto: "Responsible, hard-working people."
