This Saturday, November 4, from 1-3 p.m., head to 125th Street & Park Avenue to pitch in on installing the second half of the community section of the Grandscale Mural Project, on construction fences at 125th Street & Park Avenue.
We'll be painting a pop art pattern inspired by African kente fabrics, under the guidance of teaching artist Gera Lozano. Click to see last week's fun.
You'll also get a chance to see some of the 100-plus artists who are painting their own pieces at work on the fences on 125th Street, 124th Street, and Park, Lexington and Third avenues. Artists are painting on sunny days from now through the end of November, when all pieces will be complete.
Community members, register here to paint this Saturday! Are you part of an organization or school that would like to participate as a group? Email us at info@uptowngrandcentral.org.
End on Wed, Sep 6, 2023 at 7:30pm.
For one summer evening, the space under the train tracks will be transformed for communal dining!
Since the summer of 2015, Uptown Grand Central has worked in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to transform the space underneath the Metro-North station at East 125th Street & Park Avenue into an active community space. From hosting Turnout NYC, a season of local public arts, to providing a GrowNYC Fresh Food Box stand every Wednesday, the plaza is an exciting demonstration of the vast potential for neglected spaces under NYC's transit infrastructure.
Design Trust’s Public Space Potlucks gather urban enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds together for a shared meal and to learn more about public space initatives across the five boroughs.
The event is free and open to the public. Please bring a dish to share if you can! We will provide some snacks, drinks, cups, plates, napkins, etc.
The party and photo shoot is coming back to our community space under the train tracks at 125th Street for three Saturdays this summer: August 19, August 26 and September 2.
This year, the National Black Theatre (NBT) is celebrating female-identifying DJs and photographers who are creating a sonic, transformative journey for our community to learn, love and heal ourselves. Let loose with the musical stylings of cry$cross, Dent, Duneska, Poison Ivy and Rimarkable! And what better way to celebrate you than with free portraits taken by notable photographers: Ayesha Kazim, Floradis Espinal and Maria J Hackett.
NBT is also releasing never-before-heard archival audio called “Chants of Liberation" that was recorded by The Liberators, the original leaders and powerhouse voices of the theater. Curated and creatively driven by Nabii Faison, the chants will allow community members to listen to seminal text that helped to “Keep The Soul Alive” at NBT for more than half a century.

Along with the Design Trust for Public Space and SITU, we've been thinking through ways to make our public places more welcoming, with a focus on transforming underutilized outdoor spaces across the five boroughs into performance venues for artistic expression.
Two of the biggest challenges under the Park Avenue Viaduct are too much sound, and lack of light. So our creative partners at the National Black Theatre (NBT), NightSeeing & 3 A.M. Theatre are crafting an artistic response.
3 A.M. Theatre is responding to the light challenge with Cloud Nine: An Illuminated Circus. Witness the music come to life and experience the magic of light! Using cutting-edge LED stage lighting in conjunction with highly-skilled circus performers, world class dancers, and theatrical storytellers, this animated roadshow presents dreamlike visuals inside a vibrant set. Friday-Sunday, September 9-11, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

NBT is responding to the sound challenge with Learn to Love Yourself Saturdays: Silent Disco & Portrait Series — five artist-inspired sonic soundscapes mixed by D.J. Stormin’ Norman into a live three-hour "silent disco" session, with headphones provided on site. The sound experience is driven by National Black Theatre founder Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s commitment to being “… bold and unconventional about her love of Black people,” and in keeping with her radical belief that loving “our Black selves” is the first step toward reclaiming the collective power needed to eliminate oppression. There’ll also be a portrait booth for you and/or your family and friends. Saturdays, August 13, 20 & 27, and September 3, 3-6 p.m.
